Top 10 Skincare Myths
Share
There can be a lot of misinformation out there when it comes to skincare, this week we want to go over some of the most common myths.
#1 All SPF lotions all offer the same protection
There are two types of damaging rays that come from the sun, UV and UVB. It’s important to buy an SPF product that will protect you from both. Take into account the SPF factor too – we recommend at least SPF 30, which block 97% of UVB rays and will reduce premature ageing and sun damage. SPF should be the last step in your skincare routine, following your moisturiser.
#2 People with oily skin don’t need to moisturise
Even if you have oily skin, it is still important to moisturise. If you don’t the skin may start to dry out and then as a response start to over produce the skins natural oil, sebum. Using an effective natural moisturiser will help to balance out any overproduction whilst keeping skin soft and supple.
#3 Hot water is good for the skin
If you wash in very hot water, it can leave your skin dry and itchy as it removes the natural oils and moisture from your skin. Your face is particularly sensitive to hot water so be sure to use warm water when washing your face, along with a suitable cleanser.
#4 Acne only occurs when you’re a teenager
This is one of the biggest skin care myths out there. It may be true that puberty can be the trigger for getting acne, however those who had it in their teenage years may have it through adulthood too. Similarly, someone who never had it as a teenager could get it when they are older. Diet, lifestyle, stress and hormonal imbalances can all play a part in adults getting acne.
#5 Tight skin is a good thing
This is not true. If your skin feels ‘tight’ then it means your skin is dry, and it's time to moisturise!
#6 You only need to use SPF on hot days
Even on cloudy days the sun’s UV rays can still get through, so make sure you are protected come rain or shine all year round. You will thank yourself for it later on!
#7 Men don’t need to moisturise
Skincare may be seen as something that only women should concern themselves with, but this is not true! Skin is skin, no matter what gender. It’s important to moisturise daily so skin is nourished and healthy. You can view our men’s skincare range here.
#8 Moisturising removes wrinkles
Moisturising your skin won’t remove wrinkles, but it may help to prevent future ones and reduce the appearance of fine lines. Moisturise twice daily to keep skin nourished, and in the evenings apply a face oil for an added boost of hydration if you feel you need it.
#9 Wearing too much make up can cause acne
Wearing makeup will not cause you to get acne, not properly removing it could. Not cleaning your face properly could lead to clogged pores which can cause breakouts. Our Marine Cleansing Balm is great for removing make up, dirt, pollution and grime deep from within the pores. It's also important to remember to wash your make up brushes and tools on a regular basis so that there is no chance of bacteria building up, which could then lead to skin problems. For a quick refresh, you can spritz our Organic Sanitiser onto makeup brushes and allow them to dry to remove bacteria and give you a cleaner makeup application.
#10 A tan means your skin is healthy
No, no and no! As with sunburn, tanned skin simply means that your skin is damaged. The skin tans itself as it tries to protect itself from the sun. And this applies to tanning beds too, UV rays are not good for the skin, whether indoors or out. Want a sun kissed glow? We would always opt for a bottle of facial tan before exposing our faces to damaging UV rays.
